Coronavirus – the potential impact on the charities sector

Charities and not-for-profit organisations across the UK have been impacted by coronavirus.  Through this page we discuss the issues charities are facing, and provide guidance on the Government support available.  

The Treasury have confirmed that charities which receive half their income from trading activity will be eligible to apply for the ‘Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme’. This scheme which is delivered by the British Business Bank, provides support to SMEs and eligible charities that are experiencing financial difficulty as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

During this time of global health crisis, everyone wants to do what they can to help and nowhere is this more apparent than the charitable sector. However, there is a danger that by doing this, charities may act outside the current purposes of the charity set out in their objects clause.
