Trainee Days: A day in the Employment team
This week the trainee blog team caught up with Anna Ridley to hear about a day in the life in Cripps Pemberton Greenish’s Employment team.
8.45am: I am currently working in the employment team in our Kings Hill office. I live in South East London so this office is a much shorter commute for me. Most mornings I leave home at about 8:15am and am sitting at my desk by 8:45am – a welcome relief from the Tunbridge Wells traffic! I make myself a coffee and have a chat with the rest of the team. The team are really friendly which has made the move to the Kings Hill office easier.
9.00am: My supervisor has asked me to draft a Director’s Service Agreement. He received the instruction from a member of the corporate team who are advising on an acquisition. The corporate and employment teams often work closely together, advising clients at all stages of a transaction. I consider the instructions and begin drafting the agreement based on a precedent that we have on our system. The instructions are fairly standard but there is a slightly unusual clause to include that I draft from scratch. I have only been in the team for a few weeks and, having never studied or practiced employment law before, I research certain terms of the agreement to make sure I fully understand the parties’ obligations and the reasons for their inclusion.
11:00am: I have been asked to assist with writing an article for our employment blog on recent updates concerning employment law in the wake of Brexit. Brexit is an interesting time and I research the position to gain a greater understanding of the make-up and background to UK employment law. The blog focuses on the launch of Theresa May’s investigation into employment law practices and promoting the flexibility of the UK labour market.
1:00pm: There is a games room at the Kings Hill office but today I am meeting a friend for lunch in nearby West Malling. West Malling is only a 5 minute drive away and has a selection of nice cafes and pubs.
2.00pm: A member of the team will shortly be providing equality and diversity training to one of our client’s employees and I have been asked to put together a training pack for the session. It is a lengthy task but it is not time critical and is something that I can dip in and out of. It is actually a great task for a trainee as it has really helped me to brush up on my own knowledge of equality and diversity legislation.
4:30pm: The second year trainees are responsible for planning the firm summer ball each year. Myself and Tessa (another second year trainee) are responsible for finding a suitable venue. Today I am leaving the office early to look around a possible venue for the event. The chosen venue and theme will remain a closely guarded secret until nearer the time.
5:30pm: I head home safe in the knowledge that we have found a great venue for the summer ball. Now the real planning can begin!
